2.0 Site Status Summary

Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station (Oyster Creek) was a 1,930 Mwt, boiling water reactor that began operation in 1969 and was permanently shut down on September 17, 2018. By letter dated September 25, 2018, Exelon Generation Company (Exelon), prior owner of the facility, certified that all fuel had been removed from the reactor.

On August 31, 2018, Exelon and Holtec submitted a License Transfer Application (LTA) requesting NRC approval to transfer the Oyster Creek Renewed Facility Operating License and the General License for the Oyster Creek Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) to Oyster Creek Environmental Protection, LLC (OCEP), as the licensed owner and to Holtec Decommissioning International (HDI), as the licensed operator. The license transfer was approved by the NRC staff and became effective on July 1, 2019.

The NRC staff reviewed the revised PSDAR submitted by HDI on September 28, 2018, which includes a revised Site-Specific Decommissioning Cost Estimate and notified the NRC of changes to accelerate the schedule for the prompt decommissioning (DECON) of Oyster Creek. The NRC completed a review of the PSDAR on December 17, 2018. Decontamination and dismantlement activities are underway at the site, with partial site release (except for the ISFSI) scheduled for 2029, and license termination taking place by the end of 2035.
